# What's new in Auggie 1.x

> New features, breaking changes, and migration notes for upgrading from Auggie 0.x to 1.x.

You're viewing docs for **Auggie 1.x.x**
(prerelease). To see Auggie 0.x.x, go to
[the 0.x.x docs](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/v0/overview.md)
.

Auggie 1.x is a major rewrite of the Auggie CLI. It is a prerelease and is published under the `prerelease` tag on npm.

```sh theme={null}
# Install the 1.x prerelease
npm install -g @augmentcode/auggie@prerelease
# Switch back to 0.x
npm install -g @augmentcode/auggie@v0-release
```

## New features

* **Faster terminal UI**: A new renderer keeps scrolling and streaming smooth, and every menu supports type-to-filter.
* **Reasoning effort**: Use `/effort`, press `Shift+Tab`, or press `Tab` in `/model` to change how much a reasoning model thinks. Your choice is remembered per model.
* **Compaction**: Auggie summarizes the conversation automatically before it runs out of context. Run `/compact` to summarize on demand.
* **Session tree**: `/tree` shows conversation branches and lets you jump between them.
* **Git worktrees**: `/worktree` creates, switches, and deletes git worktrees from inside Auggie.
* **Export and import**: `/export` saves a session as HTML or JSONL, and `/import` resumes a session from a JSONL file.
* **Permissions manager**: `/permissions` shows active rules from every source and lets you add, edit, or remove rules in place.
* **Custom keybindings**: Configure shortcuts in `~/.augment/keybindings.json` and apply them with `/reload`. Run `/hotkeys` to see all shortcuts.
* **Themes**: Choose `dark`, `light`, `ansi`, or a custom theme in `/settings`.
* **Manual rules**: Attach a rule on demand by typing `$rule-name` in a message. See [Rules](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/rules.md#manual-rules).
* **New hook events**: `PromptSubmit` and `Notification` hooks. See [Hooks](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/hooks.md).

## Breaking changes

### `/config` is now `/settings`

The `/config` slash command is replaced by [`/settings`](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/settings). Changes made in `/settings` are always saved to `~/.augment/settings.json`. Auggie no longer prompts you to choose between user, project, and local settings files. Edit project or local settings files directly.

Your existing `settings.json` files continue to work.

### Personas replaced by agents

`/persona`, `--persona`, and `auggie persona` are removed. Use these instead:

* [Custom agents](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/subagents.md) in `.augment/agents/<name>.md` or `~/.augment/agents/<name>.md`
* [Rules](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/rules.md) in `.augment/rules/` or `AGENTS.md`, or instructions added to the system prompt with `.augment/APPEND_SYSTEM.md`
* [Permissions](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/permissions.md) to restrict or confirm specific tools

### Tool names

Tools now use short names. Hook matchers that use the old names still match for now. Permission rules only recognize some old names, so update your rules before upgrading.

| 1.x name | 0.x names |
| :- | :- |
| `read` | `view`, `read-file`, `read_file` |
| `edit` | `str-replace-editor`, `str_replace_editor`, `edit-file`, `edit_file` |
| `write` | `save-file`, `save_file`, `write-file`, `write_file` |
| `grep` | `grep-search`, `grep_search` |
| `find` | `file-search`, `file_search`, `find-by-name` |
| `bash` | `launch-process`, `launch_process`, `shell` |

See [Permissions](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/permissions.md#migrating-from-legacy-tool-names) for the old names that permission rules still recognize.

### Hook payloads

`bash` hooks no longer list changed files. Use `git status` or `git diff` in your hook instead. See [Hooks](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/hooks.md).

### Commands and flags

| 0.x | 1.x |
| :- | :- |
| `auggie login`, `auggie logout` | `auggie auth login`, `auggie auth logout` |
| `auggie models list` | `auggie model list` |
| `--quiet`, `--output-format json` | `--mode text` (default), `--mode stream`, or `--mode json` |
| `--show-credits` | `--show-cost` (the old name still works) |
| `--rules <path>` | `--rule <path>` (the old name still works) |
| `--dont-save-session` | `--no-session` |
| `--instruction-file <path>` | `@<path>` |
| `/sessions` | `/resume` |
| `/rename` | `/name` |
| `/stats` | `/session` |
| `/editor`, `Ctrl+O` | `Ctrl+G` |
| `Shift+Tab` toggles plan mode | `Shift+Tab` changes the reasoning effort |
| `/<skill-name>` | `/skill:<skill-name>` |
| `/<plugin>:<command>` | `/<plugin>--<marketplace>:<command>` |
| `auggie mcp add <name> -- <command>`, `auggie mcp add <name> <url>` | `auggie mcp add <name> --command <command> --args "<args>"`, `auggie mcp add <name> --url <url>` |
| `auggie mcp add --header` short flag `-h` | `-H` |

See the [CLI reference](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/reference.md) and [Interactive mode](https://docs.augmentcode.com/cli/interactive.md) for the full list.

### Removed

* Inline completions while typing. The `enableChatInputCompletions` setting is ignored.
* Gist-based session sharing (`/share` and `auggie session share`).
* The task list (`/task`).
* MCP server mode (`auggie --mcp`).
* The `/skills` browser. Type `/skill:` to see available skills.
* Rules shipped in plugins (`rules/` in a plugin). Plugin commands, agents, skills, hooks, and MCP servers still load.

## Sessions from 0.x

Run `/import-legacy-sessions` to import sessions from Auggie 0.x.
